WPC is luxury vinyl plank built on a wood-plastic composite core, and it is what we recommend for homes in East Tennessee, on every subfloor. The core is the thick middle of the plank; WPC's version has a little give and a lot of stability, which matters here more than most places. Our region swings from humid summers to dry winter heat, and a floor that can expand and contract with the seasons is a floor that stays flat and quiet. We've watched WPC hold up beautifully through Tennessee seasons where SPC struggles, and on wood subfloors it outlasts SPC by a wide margin.

SPC is luxury vinyl plank built on a stone-plastic composite core: denser, harder, and more rigid than WPC. Its home is commercial work, installed glue-down, where rolling loads and constant traffic reward a rock-hard core. That's exactly how we spec it for storefronts and offices.

As you can probably tell, we're not the biggest fans of SPC for houses, but SPC absolutely has its place and its value. A floating SPC is an honest choice for a rental, a flip, or a tighter budget, and over a flat, level slab it performs well. WPC generally runs more per square foot. For a rental you're turning over, that math matters: buy the SPC. For the house you'll live in for twenty years, the difference disappears into the years you don't spend replacing it.

Can you put LVP on a concrete slab?

Yes, and it's one of the most common installs we do, with one condition that decides everything: the slab has to be flat. A click-together plank bridges dips instead of filling them, and a floor installed over a wavy slab is a floor that's going to come apart, WPC or SPC. Get the slab flat first and both cores handle concrete fine; our pick for a home is still WPC, even over a slab, because the seasonal movement problem doesn't go away just because the subfloor is masonry. What we stock and what we recommend

For most people who walk in our door, the recommendation is the same: a WPC plank with at least a 20 mil wear layer. The wear layer is the clear coating you actually walk on, measured in mils (thousandths of an inch), and it's the first number we check on any plank, ours or a competitor's. Thin wear layers are where bargain "waterproof" floors quietly fail early. With our wholesale pricing, a 20 mil WPC from us often lands near what a thinner plank costs at a big box store.

We also keep some 12 mil SPCs in stock, because they have an honest place: flippers, property managers, and rentals, where the floor needs to be presentable and replaceable rather than permanent.
